Mastering Empathy

Immersive Methods for Human-Centered Design

SERVICE DESIGN MASTERCLASS

Service Design experts often talk about empathy and how important it is. But they don’t tell us how to incorporate it into our design processes.

So some of us don’t even try. Some want to but can’t, because we’re stressed, blocked, and burned out. And many of us who manage it don’t get the most out of it, because we’re stuck in our heads and closing our hearts.

Froukje & Brian have been studying and working with empathy for decades. And we’ve seen firsthand the power it can have in a professional context. So we’re here to bring empathy back from being a buzzword to becoming our everyday mindset.

During the masterclass, you’ll learn why empathy is important for service design, how it works, and what factors of empathy we can train to get better at it. Then, we’ll practice real techniques you can use to experience empathy with the people you design for.

These techniques go beyond personas or traditional interviews. So this masterclass is for folks (mainly service designers, UX designers, product designers and user researchers) who already have some experience in design research and are willing to step a little out of their comfort zone and open their hearts to authentic human connection.

What will you learn?

  • Theoretical background of the Empathy construct:
Get to know the theoretical frameworks that help you to practice empathy in design.
  • Deep Connection for Richer Insights:
Learn through direct enactment and actively experience empathic activities to uncover bias, manage our own capacity for empathy, and get closer to people’s experiences.
  • Practising Methods:
Integrate these embodied experiences directly into design practices, such as interviewing through connecting, remote research methods, and service prototyping.
  • Understanding positionality:
You learn how to become aware of latent factors that influence your perception of other people, especially interviewees, users, customers, and coworkers.
  • Empathic interviewing:
You learn some simple yet immensely powerful interview techniques to help transform a surface-level interview into a connective, emotional, and insightful exchange.
  • (Remote) rolling research & cocreation:
You learn how to set up & implement an inexpensive tech stack and process for ongoing co-design & research with real people, wherever they are.

Why is it useful?

Empathy is a trait and people differ in this trait, but guess what?! It can be trained! Using empathic techniques in design research helps understanding the needs of your users, customers, people you work with and eventually yourself as well.
